About the therapy

Ego-structuring psychotherapy

One application of the Lacanian theory is a specific cognitive psychotherapy with psychotics and borderline personalities. The strategy is to use the client's narcissism to promote a structuring of the deficient ego.

Ego-structuring psychotherapy brings, according to the theory of Jacques Lacan, the Name of the Father into effect, so that the psychotic person becomes linguistically structured and develops his/her view of the world, and he/she becomes a historically identified person leading a fulfilling life.

The Greek myth of Ariadne with the red thread can be used as an analogy for the therapeutic setting. The psychotherapist uses a non-polarizing way of talking, in order to frame a dialogue and to avoid contradictions with the client. By holding the main thread the psychotherapist takes an active part in the therapeutic process, as the client develops his/her linguistic structure and pleads his/her own cause.
